A Holistic Approach to Enterprise Systems

Part II: Why Just Add ERP Doesn't Work — And What to Do Instead

The Promise of ERP Systems

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems like Odoo offer the promise of efficiency. This promise is alluring - one fully integrated and unified system supporting all your key business processes. The idea of a single application suite that replaces all your disconnected apps and fragile integrations is compelling.

But here’s the reality: too many ERP projects fail despite having the best of intentions, smart people supporting them, and intense effort expended on the project. Why?

Let’s break it down.

The Most Common ERP Mistake

Most teams want the same thing, a successful ERP rollout that delivers value. But one of the biggest mistakes organizations make is trying to drop a new system into a messy, overgrown application ecosystem without addressing the underlying complexity and inefficient processes first.

When that happens the new system doesn’t fix the chaos, it becomes part of it.

Instead of streamlining your systems, you end up magnifying the existing pain points. What should have made things easier now makes them harder. The result?

  • Longer process timeframes
  • Increased project costs
  • User resistance and adoption challenges
  • Continued data fragmentation
  • Diminished returns on your ERP investment

Why “Just Add ERP” Fails

This is where asking “why” becomes powerful. Why are we doing this? What exactly are we trying to solve? Too often, teams jump straight to implementation without getting clarity on the real business drivers or the conditions needed for success.

Let’s take a closer look at the things that typically derail ERP projects:

  1. Incoherent processes: Legacy processes are usually designed around specific tools. They rarely map cleanly to how an ERP wants things done. If you haven’t stepped back to ask, “Why do we do it this way?”, you may end up forcing bad processes into a new system.
  2. Conflicting data models: One system’s definition of a “customer” or ‘Supplier” might differ wildly from another. When these definitions collide in an ERP, master data maintenance can become a daily problem and data quality takes a hit.
  3. Integration complexity: Connecting your ERP to a pile of old systems creates a web of complexity — and risk. Every connection point becomes a maintenance headache and potential failure point.
  4. Change overload: Users are expected to learn the new ERP while still working in legacy systems. That’s a recipe for frustration, resistance, and adoption delays.
  5. Governance challenges: Who owns the data? Who approves changes? If your existing systems all have different owners and processes, conflict is inevitable once a new ERP enters the picture.

The Real Problem: Misalignment

Here’s the truth: most ERP failures aren’t caused by technology, they’re caused by misalignment. People don’t fully understand the problem they’re solving, or the environment isn’t ready for the change. When this happens, the ERP just becomes one more system on top of a fragmented foundation.

Before you implement your new ERP system, simplify! Clean up the system sprawl, get your processes in order, and align your stakeholders. Otherwise, you’re just adding another layer of complexity to an already overloaded environment.

In our next article, we'll explore why application ecosystem simplification is essential before implementing an ERP system.
